Located in the heart of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the commune of Serres-Castet enjoys an exceptional environment. This territory, characterized by a mosaic of fertile plains and green hills, is known for its mild and humid climate, ideal for diversified agriculture. Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the leading agricultural region in France, is famous for its rural vitality, fruit production, and local know-how. Traditionally focused on large-scale crops and livestock, the region now welcomes innovative projects that enhance its agricultural and environmental appeal.
Mr. Tucou's farm plans to plant 2 hectares of kiwis in March 2023. The selected plots were previously used for annual corn crops.
Planting permanent trees will sequester more CO2 throughout the year than a temporary crop. This project will store 102.38 tons of CO2 equivalent in 20 years*.
The soil will also be able to sequester more CO2 because it will no longer be worked every year. In addition, this new plantation will require less fertilizer and treatments compared to previous crops. This new cultivation itinerary will contribute to avoid emissions and makes the project even more virtuous.
The project responds to social-economic issues: Kiwi production is still low in France, increasing it means reducing our imports. This plantation will also allow the farmer to diversify his income.
A project favorable to biodiversity: the establishment of new permanent crops on the farm will provide a stable habitat for various species that were not necessarily present.
Soil preservation: The soil will also be able to sequester more CO2 because it will no longer be worked each year.
The water resource will be protected: 80% of the orchard will benefit from a permanent grass cover. This action will be very beneficial for biodiversity and will limit overconsumption of water. Precision irrigation equipment will also be used to limit the amount of water needed by the crops.
