Mr. Alain Quelennec has just created a farm in the Hérault, which will be centered on the cultivation of organic almond trees. He intends to carry out several planting stages, including a first of 1.4 ha of organic almond trees in 2023. The plots chosen were previously undeveloped landlocked meadows. The planting of permanent trees will make it possible to sequester more CO2 throughout the year, in all 102.99 tons of CO2eq in 20 years*.
The variety of almonds planted is the Lauranne, used for dragées, nougats, praliné in particular. The fruit will be harvested by the Sud Amandes agricultural cooperative, a partner in the project, which produces, transforms and markets French almonds for professional confectioners, pastry chefs, nougat makers, chocolate makers, etc.
-Organic Agriculture certification will impose the use of natural inputs only on almond trees. The soil will also be able to sequester more CO2 because it will no longer be worked each year and will partly be permanently grassed. In addition, this new plantation will require less fertilizer and treatments compared to previous crops. This new cultural itinerary will contribute to avoiding emissions and makes the project even more virtuous.
-Finally, some of the organic almonds will be sold locally in the region, and this project will help reduce France's dependence on almond imports from abroad.
* The final value of the estimate will only be established after verification by an independent auditor and an administrative verification decision.
