This afforestation project is located in Mouron-sur-Yonne in the department of Nièvre (58) in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The objective is to afforest a 26-hectare plot already partially surrounded by woods and thus allow the storage of an additional 8,257 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 30 years*. The plot concerned is located on the edge of the Morvan Regional Natural Park, a preserved area with a rich ecosystem. Such afforestation on the edge of the park will extend this ecological continuity.
Biodiversity: The afforestation will consist of one-third coniferous trees adapted to global warming (Douglas fir, Atlas cedar, Nordmann fir, Scots pine, Austrian black pine and maritime pine) and two-thirds resilient local hardwoods ( sessile oak, pedunculate oak, chestnut, beech, hornbeam). This mix of 11 different species will be very beneficial for the development of biodiversity on the plot.
Socio-economic: PEFC certification is planned for this plantation in order to guarantee its sustainable management. In addition, thinning and cutting will be alternated on the plot, which allows for a continuous mixed cover and makes forestry activity more respectful of the environment. Clearly the plot will remain permanently wooded despite the cuts.
Protection of water resources: pedunculate oak was selected to afforest a riverside area specifically for its suitability for wetlands. There will be no conifers within 10 meters of wetlands to prevent acidification of these environments.
* The final value of the estimate will only be established after verification by an independent auditor and an administrative verification decision.
