Mr. De Fuentes plans to expand his almond orchards by planting a new plot of 1.76 hectares in early 2024. This is an old plot of vines which was uprooted a few years ago and where sorghum was grown. been cultivated in the meantime. Planting permanent trees will sequester more CO2: 94.33 tons of CO2eq for 20 years*.
The fruits will be harvested by the Sud Amandes agricultural cooperative, a partner in the project, which produces, processes and markets French almonds, notably to professional confectioners, pastry chefs, nougat makers and chocolatiers.
This project makes it possible to relocate the production of almonds in France because this product is today mainly imported from abroad. The almonds will mainly be marketed in France by Sud Amandes.
The soil will also be able to sequester more CO2 because it will no longer be worked each year. In addition, this new plantation will require little fertilizer and treatment compared to previous crops. This new cultivation route will help to avoid emissions and makes the project even more virtuous.
Water resources will be used in small quantities because the orchards have a precision irrigation system.
* The final value of the estimate will only be established after verification by an independent auditor and an administrative verification decision.
