Due to the shortening of cold winters regulating insect populations, bark beetles are developing exponentially and nibbling away at stands.
This epidemic mainly affects forests in northern and eastern France, causing rapid dieback and even death. The phenomenon is easily identifiable, with stands turning from green to brown or white, and becoming sensitive to the slightest gust of wind. These "dry" woodlands end up crumbling to the ground, leaving a desolate landscape and no longer capture CO2. If the forest is neither adapted nor renewed, this situation can lead to its gradual disappearance. As the trees are no longer valuable, silvicultural management is also compromised. This is known as "silvicultural deadlock".
This 5-hectare reforestation project at Aubaine in the Côte-d'Or department will store 1738 tonnes of CO2 equivalent over 30 years*. The plots concerned by the project were completely harvested because of the bark beetle. Unfortunately, the existing stand was almost monospecific, making reforestation essential. It was decided to plant a mixture of species (downy oak, Douglas fir and Atlas cedar) better suited to prolonged hot periods.
Socio-economic : A local forestry company will carry out the reforestation.
Soil preservation : The plot will not be cleaned after harvesting, and the soil will be prepared in strips before reforestation to preserve the micro-fauna and carbon in the forest soils.
