New diversified afforestation in Saint-Josse
Located in the heart of Hauts-de-France, the municipality of Saint-Josse lies within the Pas-de-Calais department, a region renowned for its rich natural and rural heritage. Primarily agricultural, this area enjoys a temperate oceanic climate with mild winters and regular rainfall, ideal for the growth of diverse forests. Pas-de-Calais is characterized by its bocage landscapes, numerous rivers, and valleys, and is known for its agricultural traditions and increasing commitment to ecological transition. The local economy blends agriculture, livestock farming, green tourism, and crafts, strengthening the bond between people and nature. With a strong history and a distinctive cultural identity, the region now places sustainable land management and biodiversity conservation at the center of its development.
The afforestation will take place on underdeveloped agricultural land, surrounded by existing forests. This afforestation project will further expand these forests over 5.31 hectares, using a diverse mix of species. Planting is scheduled for January 2024 and will sequester 1,629 tons of CO2eq over 30 years*.
Biodiversity: Seven different species were selected for this afforestation: sessile oak, hornbeam, wild cherry, Norway maple, American red oak, chestnut, and wild service tree. The species chosen were studied to be resistant to global warming while being adapted to current conditions. 100% of the afforestation will therefore consist of hardwoods, and existing tree lines will be preserved.
Socioeconomic: The company that will carry out the forestry work is located only 38 km away.
Air quality: The afforestation is located in the Deux Baies urban community in Montreuil and will help improve the air quality of this urban area.
