Examples: reducing the frequency of soil cultivation, minimalist plot preparation, restoring organic matter and preserving soil microfauna.
Examples: diversity and locality of crop species, preservation of habitat for local flora and fauna, presence of beehives for pollination.
Examples: territorial dynamics, societal demand, diversification of the activity, local sales/processing, working conditions, sharing of good practices.
Examples: Consideration of wetlands, use of adapted species, drip-connected irrigation tools.
Plantation of 3.5 hectares of apple trees in Aude
The projetc is located in the Aude department, heart of Occitanie region, within a Mediterranean landscape where gentle hills meet the foothills of the Corbières. Saint-Frichoux, a small village of 700 inhabitants, enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers, mild winters, and annual rainfall of 600-700 mm, ideal for fruit growing. Historically, this rural area draws its economy from agriculture, with a strong tradition in viticulture and pome fruits like apples, supported by rich clay-limestone soils and a preserved terroir. Occitanie, southern France's agricultural powerhouse, accounts for 20% of national apple production.
Monsieur Luc plans to plant 3.5 hectares of apple trees in December 2024. The selected plots were previously used for annual cereal crops.
Planting permanent trees will sequester more CO2 throughout the year compared to a temporary crop. This project will allow the storage of 152.29 tonnes of CO2 equivalent over 20 years*.
The soil will also be able to sequester more CO2 because it will no longer be worked each year.
The farm has been certified High Environmental Value (HVE) since 2022, which guarantees reasoned and efficient management of its inputs (fertilizers, irrigation, phytosanitary products) as well as the preservation of hedges, tree lines, wood edges and others. natural features of ecological interest around the plots.
The project responds to socio-economic issues: Apple production will be sold nearby in the department, as well as at the regional level.
Water resources will be used sparingly, as the orchards are equipped with a precision irrigation system that allows for controlled watering.
* The final value of the estimate will only be established after verification by an independent auditor and an administrative verification decision.
