Examples: reducing the frequency of soil cultivation, minimalist plot preparation, restoring organic matter and preserving soil microfauna.
Examples: diversity and locality of crop species, preservation of habitat for local flora and fauna, presence of beehives for pollination.
Examples: territorial dynamics, societal demand, diversification of the activity, local sales/processing, working conditions, sharing of good practices.
Plantation of 34.3 hectares in Servon-Melzicourt
Due to the shortening of cold winters regulating insect populations, bark beetles are developing exponentially and nibbling away at stands.
This epidemic mainly concerns the forests of northern and eastern France and causes rapid decline, or even the death of trees. This phenomenon is easily identifiable with stands turning from green to brown or white, becoming sensitive to the slightest gust of wind. These “dry” woodlands end up crashing to the ground, leaving desolate landscapes and no longer capturing CO2. If the forest massif is neither adapted nor renewed, this situation can lead to its gradual disappearance. Since the trees no longer have any value, forest management is also compromised. We are talking here about a "silvicultural dead end".
This 34.3 hectare reforestation project located in Servon-Melzicourt in the Marne will make it possible to store 7,607 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 30 years*. The islands concerned by the project were completely harvested because of the bark beetle on the one hand, and because of dying poplars on the other. It was decided to plant a mixture of 6 species (sessile and pubescent oak, American red oak, American black walnut, Douglas fir, Salzmann pine) better adapted to prolonged hot periods.
Biodiversity: Some of the species selected are native, the others are more adapted to climate change. The edges of the plot will be mainly planted with hardwoods. Reforestation is very targeted within the forest massif and only concerns the most affected areas.
Soil preservation: Pre-planting tillage will be done only on the planting line, in order to preserve these carbon-rich forest soils.
Socio-economic: Reforestation will be PEFC certified.
* The final value of the estimate will only be established after verification by an independent auditor and an administrative verification decision.
