e-recycle is a company with its head office and workshops based in Lyon. It specialises in the reconditioning of electronic equipment, and has been dedicated to reducing electronic waste for over seven years. Based on the principles of circularity, the company manages the majority of its processes in-house and works with partners in the south of France. Not only does this approach enable second-hand products to be recycled, it also reduces carbon emissions while extending the life of digital equipment.
The carbon footprint of the digital sector is one of the most pressing challenges to decarbonisation, accounting for 6% of global emissions and growing at a double-digit rate. If nothing is done, this figure could rise to 20% by 2030. With over 40 billion digital products in circulation, the production of terminals alone accounts for 80% of their carbon footprint. Yet only 17% of end-of-life devices are collected efficiently, and less than 5% are reconditioned. In Europe, 70% of reconditioned computers come from China or the United States. Developing efficient, local refurbishing infrastructures in Europe is therefore a priority.
e-recycle stands out for its strong local roots: 98% of reconditioned appliances come from France. This is the most locally-based project ever certified, making it a concrete example of the circular economy serving the ecological transition.
Thanks to the carbon credits, e-recycle plans to triple its production capacity in five years. These investments will enable them to improve their operations, increase the number of reconditioned appliances and amplify their impact in reducing electronic waste and carbon emissions. The aim is also to make their local model as competitive as possible with that of the big reconditioners, whose equipment sometimes comes from Asia to optimise costs.
