This project will produce artisanal biochar from bamboo and compost to enhance soil quality for 1,000 small farmers.
This project, the first of its kind in the country, uses hitherto little-used agricultural bamboo waste as biomass, mixed with compost to produce biochar. Certified Carbon Standard International (C-Sink), it will produce 1,800 tonnes of biochar a year. Nearly 1,000 small-scale farmers in the rural Littoral region will be able to use this biochar as a soil improver for their fields, improving water retention, soil fertility and carbon sequestration. This initiative will make farms less vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
The vision of the CarbonLog Partners project is to empower and build the capacity of smallholder farmer networks in Cameroon and Africa, who contribute to at least 60% of the economy but are often overlooked. By placing these farmers at the center of activities with new techniques for transforming their agricultural and forestry residues into biochar, it is possible to improve sustainable agricultural practices and enrich soils. This will lead to higher yields and reduced use of synthetic fertilizers, allowing farmers to earn additional income.
This project will boost rural community development, enhance the economic empowerment of farmers, and promote social cohesion. New job opportunities will be created, contributing to the fight against deforestation and reducing wildfires in farmlands due to waste abundance. Flooding in farmlands, caused by agricultural residues blocking waterways, will also be prevented.
By reducing air and water pollution, this project will actively participate in global climate change mitigation and contribute to food security in Africa and the world. Ultimately, it will positively support the "Net Zero" mission by 2050, with rural farmers at the heart of activities.
