Across six districts in south-west Rwanda, this transformative agroforestry project is creating climate resilience for rural communities while contributing to global carbon sequestration efforts.
In the Buberuka Highland region of Rwanda, where smallholder agriculture faces increasing threats from climate change including droughts, floods, and soil degradation, this comprehensive agroforestry initiative is revolutionizing land management practices. The project implements multiple agroforestry models including boundary planting, contour hedgerows, homegardens, and scattered tree systems across 15,000 hectares of agricultural land.
By planting 4.5 million trees representing 15 diverse species (including 7 native varieties), the project enhances biodiversity while providing multiple benefits to farming communities. The carefully selected tree species include fruit trees like avocado, citrus, and mango alongside indigenous species such as Podocarpus Falcatus and Ficus thonningii, creating a balanced ecosystem that supports both carbon sequestration and agricultural productivity.
The project directly benefits 23,000 farmers across the region, improving their livelihoods through diversified income sources, enhanced soil fertility, and increased climate resilience. Beyond carbon capture, the initiative promotes sustainable agricultural practices, provides training programs, and supports the participation of female-headed households in environmental restoration efforts.
Over its 20-year implementation period, the project is projected to sequester 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, generating significant carbon credits while contributing to Rwanda's climate goals and the global fight against climate change. Led by local company GSS Ltd with extensive experience in seedling production and landscape restoration, and supported by French carbon project developer Carbonapp, this initiative represents a successful model of international collaboration for sustainable development.
