The Biochar Corrientes Carbon Continuum Project represents Argentina's first industrial biochar facility, strategically positioned in Santa Rosa, Corrientes. Led by EcoGaia and Emisiones Neutras in partnership with FASA, this groundbreaking initiative transforms forest residues into high-value biochar through advanced pyrolysis technology, creating a comprehensive circular economy solution.
The project addresses multiple environmental challenges simultaneously: it mitigates wildfire risks by responsibly managing forest waste (a critical concern in Corrientes where over one million hectares burned in 2022), captures carbon in stable form for centuries, and converts waste into valuable resources. The initial facility will process 60,000 tons of FSC-certified pine and eucalyptus residues annually, producing 18,000 tons of premium biochar while sequestering 36,000 tons of CO₂ equivalent.
Beyond carbon capture, the produced biochar serves diverse applications including agricultural soil enhancement, sustainable construction materials, and water filtration systems, creating multiple revenue streams and maximizing environmental impact. The project operates with complete energy self-sufficiency, utilizing syngas generated during pyrolysis to power all operations, eliminating external energy dependencies.
Future expansion phases will scale capacity to 150,000 tons annually, tapping into Argentina's vast 113 million-ton annual biomass surplus. This positions Argentina as a regional leader in biochar production and carbon sequestration while creating 50 direct jobs and 400 indirect employment opportunities in rural communities.
The project aligns with multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals and operates under Puro.Earth certification standards, ensuring compliance with the highest international carbon removal verification protocols.
