Located in the heart of Lot-et-Garonne, the commune of Casteljaloux lies on the edge of the Landes de Gascogne region, a region characterized by a landscape of forests, meadows, and agricultural areas. This region benefits from a temperate oceanic climate, favorable to forest growth, but is also experiencing pressures related to climate change, including more frequent droughts. The historically agricultural territory is committed to diversifying land uses in order to preserve water resources, restore natural environments, and strengthen ecological resilience.
The afforestation will take place on a meadow surrounded by rows of trees. This afforestation project will create 1.74 hectares of forest, with Atlas cedar and American red oak. Planting is planned for the winter of 2025-2026 and will sequester 418 tons of CO2eq over 30 years*.
In terms of co-benefits:
-Socio-economic: Local forestry stakeholders will be involved in this project.
-Biodiversity: The plantation will complement existing trees on the periphery of the plots by incorporating a balanced mix of hardwoods and softwoods.
-Soil preservation: The soil will only be worked in strips along the planting line to preserve carbon and soil microfauna.
