Located in the heart of Maine-et-Loire, near the UNESCO-listed Loire Valley, Saint-Philbert-du-Peuple embodies the rural and authentic spirit of Anjou. This area, known for its bocage landscapes, fertile soils, and rich agricultural heritage, enjoys a temperate oceanic climate favorable to diverse crops and forestry. The local economy is based on mixed farming, viticulture, and livestock, with a strong tradition of sustainable resource management. Poplar, a key species, plays a central role in the regional wood sector, valued for its versatility in industry and construction.
The afforestation will take place on agricultural land that is currently underutilised. This afforestation project will create 6.58 hectares of forest using a mix of I 45 51, Koster and Garo poplar trees. Planting is planned for winter 2025/2026 and will sequester 1,635 tonnes of CO2eq over 30 years*.
Socio-economic: Local forestry companies will be commissioned for this afforestation.
Soil preservation: The poplars will be planted using an auger without prior soil preparation, to limit the impact on soil life and avoid releasing the carbon contained in the organic matter.
Biodiversity: The project consists exclusively of hardwoods suited to the characteristics of the terrain, both in terms of climate and soil.
Preservation of water resources: the afforestation will take place near a catchment point, and helps to filter the water nearby.
Air filtration: the project is located in the Saumur urban area, and contributes to improving the air quality of this urban area.
