Villeneuve-en-Retz, located in Loire-Atlantique on the north coast of the Guérande peninsula, is a gem of the French Atlantic littoral. This authentic village, bordered by the ocean and salt marshes, enjoys a mild oceanic climate, with gentle winters and temperate summers, ideal for diverse flora. Historically shaped by its saline terroir, the region's economy revolves around fishing, oyster farming, and sustainable agriculture, with the Guérande marshes listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for their artisanal salt production. Villeneuve-en-Retz embodies the harmony between sea, land, and Breton traditions, where marine and terrestrial biodiversity coexist in a preserved landscape.
This project is located in the municipalities of Villeneuve-en-Retz and Machecoul-Saint-Même in Loire-Atlantique. Afforestation will take place on former farmland that is currently underutilised. This afforestation project will create 3 hectares of forest using a diverse mix of tree species. Planting is scheduled for early 2026 and will sequester 949 tonnes of CO2eq over 30 years*.
Biodiversity: Four different species were selected for this afforestation project: red oak, hornbeam, chestnut and maritime pine. The species chosen have been studied to withstand global warming while being adapted to current conditions. In addition, existing forest edges and tree lines will be preserved.
Socio-economic: A local forestry company will be responsible for the afforestation, and PEFC certification of the afforestation is planned.
Soil preservation: The plot will be prepared for planting using strip tillage to limit the impact on soil life and avoid releasing the carbon contained in organic matter.
Air quality: this project will contribute to improving air quality in an urban community of nearly 70,000 inhabitants.
