The municipality of Porte-de-Savoie, nestled in the heart of the Savoie department in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, is an Alpine gem where mountains, crystal-clear lakes, and verdant valleys blend majestically. Historically marked by its strategic role on the Grand-Saint-Bernard pass route, this Savoyard territory enjoys a temperate continental climate with cold winters and mild summers, ideal for fruit farming. The local economy thrives on tourism, agri-food, and ancestral arboriculture, where hazelnut and walnut trees have reigned for centuries, contributing to a terroir rich in biodiversity and local products like Grenoble walnuts AOC.
Mr. Saudino plans to plant 8.33 hectares of walnut trees during the winter of 2025/2026 to expand his fruit orchards. The selected plots were previously used for annual cereal crops.
Planting permanent trees will allow for greater CO2 sequestration throughout the year compared to a temporary crop. This project will store 476.77 tonnes of CO2 equivalent over 20 years*.
-The project addresses socio-economic issues: The walnut production will be sold primarily locally.
-Water resources will be protected: To limit soil erosion, leaching, and therefore the overuse of fertilizers, 100% of the orchard will benefit from permanent grass cover. This action will also be very beneficial for local biodiversity and will limit water overconsumption. Furthermore, this new planting will require less fertilizer and fewer treatments compared to previous crops. This new cultivation method will help reduce emissions and make the project even more environmentally friendly.
