The Sarthe, a lush department in northwest France, nestled between the Maine and Loire rivers, boasts a rich history and biodiversity. Historically shaped by agriculture and livestock farming, this Pays de la Loire region enjoys a temperate oceanic climate with mild summers and humid winters, perfect for resilient forest growth. Pirmil, a rural commune of 1,200 residents, is surrounded by typical bocage landscapes where hedges and ancient woods define the terroir.
This project is located in the municipality of Pirmil in the Sarthe department. The afforestation will take place on a plot of land that is currently underutilized and adjoins an existing woodland. This afforestation project will create 3.9 hectares of forest, using a diverse mix of tree species. Planting is scheduled for late 2026 and will sequester 1,111 tonnes of CO2eq over 30 years*.
Biodiversity: Four different species have been selected for this 100% broadleaf woodland: downy oak, sycamore maple, sessile oak, and common hornbeam. The chosen species were selected for their resistance to climate change while also being adapted to current conditions. The seedlings will be planted in clusters of less than 25 ares within the plot.
Socio-economic: A local forestry company will be responsible for the afforestation, and PEFC certification of the afforestation is planned.
