This project is taking place in the commune of Vensac in Gironde. The forests in these communes were ravaged by fire in July 2022. The original trees on these plots were decimated and died standing. The reforestation project involves replanting the 3.9-hectare area with maritime pine and American red oak, species suited to the local conditions: sandy, poor soil and high levels of sunlight. 664 tonnes of CO2eq will be sequestered over 30 years thanks to this project*.
The timber from these forests is harvested using an optimised management model designed to maximise its value. Thanks to local processing, every part of the tree is utilised to its full potential, with a view to ensuring nothing goes to waste:
- Pulping: smaller sections and lower-quality wood are used for the production of paper pulp.
- Sawing: medium-sized timber is used to make pallets, transport crates and other packaging products.
- Timber: the highest-quality sections are turned into building materials or furniture.
- Utilisation of by-products: sawdust and bark are recovered for use as mulch, firelighters or reconstituted panels, thus avoiding any waste. Pine cones can also be used in cosmetics thanks to innovative research by the company Oceopins.
These initiatives help to boost the local economy by supporting a sustainable and more environmentally friendly sector.
- Local stakeholders from the forestry sector will be invited to work on this project. The plantation will be PEFC-certified.
- The landowner has taken out forestry insurance that covers reforestation in the event of a future fire.
- Hardwood buffer strips will be established around the edges of the plots.
* The final value of the estimate will only be established following verification by an independent auditor and an administrative verification decision.
