This project is taking place in the municipality of Hostens in Gironde. The forests in this municipality were ravaged by fire in July 2022. The original trees on these plots were decimated and died standing. The reforestation project involves replanting the 24.5-hectare area with maritime pine and taeda pine, which are suited to the local conditions: sandy, poor soil and high levels of sunlight. 3,817 tonnes of CO2eq will be sequestered over 30 years thanks to this project*.
The timber from these forests is harvested using an optimised management model designed to maximise its value. Thanks to local processing, every part of the tree is utilised to its full potential, with a view to ensuring nothing goes to waste:
-Pulping: smaller sections and lower-quality wood are used for the production of paper pulp.
-Sawing: medium-sized timber is used to make pallets, transport crates and other packaging products.
-Timber: the highest-quality sections are turned into building materials or furniture.
-Utilisation of by-products: sawdust and bark are recovered for use as mulch, firelighters or reconstituted panels, thus avoiding any waste. Pine cones can also be used in cosmetics thanks to innovative research by the company Oceopins.
These initiatives help to boost the local economy by supporting a sustainable and more environmentally friendly sector.
- The plantation will be PEFC-certified, guaranteeing sustainable and responsible forest management.
- The owner has taken out forest insurance covering reforestation in the event of a future fire.
-The ditches on these plots will be fully restored to re-establish water flow.
