This project is taking place in the commune of Belin-Béliet in Gironde. The forests in this commune were ravaged by fire during the summer of 2022. The original trees on these plots were decimated and died standing. The reforestation project involves replanting the 23-hectare area with maritime pine and cork oak, species well-suited to the local conditions: sandy, nutrient-poor soil and high levels of sunlight. This project will sequester 4,620 tonnes of CO₂eq over 30 years*.
The timber from these forests is harvested according to an optimised management model designed to maximise its value. Through local processing, every part of the tree is utilised to its full potential, with a view to minimising waste:
-Pulping: smaller pieces and lower-quality timber are used for the production of paper pulp.
-Sawing: medium-sized timber is used to manufacture pallets, transport crates and other packaging products.
-Timber: the highest-quality pieces are processed into building materials or furniture.
-Utilisation of by-products: sawdust and bark are recovered for use as mulch, firelighters or reconstituted panels, thereby avoiding any waste. Pine cones can also be utilised in cosmetics thanks to innovative research by the company Oceopins.
These initiatives help to boost the local economy by supporting a sustainable and more environmentally friendly sector.
-Local forestry stakeholders will be involved in this project. The plantation will be PEFC-certified.
-The landowner has taken out forestry insurance covering reforestation in the event of a future fire.
-Hardwood buffer strips will be established around the edges of the plots, and trees that survived the fire will be retained.
-The soil will be worked only along the planting line to preserve soil carbon and its microfauna.
* The final value of the estimate will only be determined following verification by an independent auditor and an administrative verification decision.
