This project is taking place in the commune of Sainte-Hélène in Gironde. The forests in this commune were ravaged by fire in September 2022. The original trees on these plots were decimated and died standing. The reforestation project involves replanting the area across 102.96 hectares with maritime pine, longleaf pine and cork oak, species suited to the local conditions: sandy, poor soil and high levels of sunlight. 16,029 tonnes of CO2eq will be sequestered over 30 years thanks to this project*.
The timber from these forests is harvested using an optimised management model designed to maximise its value. Thanks to local processing, every part of the tree is utilised to its full potential, with a view to ensuring nothing goes to waste:
-Pulping: smaller sections and lower-quality wood are used for the production of paper pulp.
-Sawing: medium-sized timber is used to make pallets, transport crates and other packaging products.
-Timber: the highest-quality sections are turned into building materials or furniture.
-Utilisation of by-products: sawdust and bark are recovered for use as mulch, firelighters or reconstituted panels, thus avoiding any waste. Pine cones can also be used in cosmetics thanks to innovative research by the company Oceopins.
These initiatives help to boost the local economy by supporting a sustainable and more environmentally friendly sector.
-Local forestry stakeholders will be engaged to work on this project. The plantation will be PEFC-certified.
-The owner has taken out forestry insurance covering reforestation in the event of a future fire.
-Hardwood windbreaks will be established around the edges of the plots.
