The project is located in the commune of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, on the Cotentin Peninsula in the Manche department, an area characterised by a landscape of hedgerows, meadows and scattered woodlands. Although forest cover here is relatively limited compared to the national average, afforestation plays a vital role in maintaining ecological connectivity, protecting the soil and helping the area adapt to climate change.
Afforestation will take place on agricultural plots of low value. This afforestation project will create 3.2 hectares of woodland, using a diverse mix of tree species consisting mainly of deciduous trees. The afforestation will help to expand adjacent woodlands. Planting is scheduled for late 2026 / early 2027 and is expected to sequester 1,065 tonnes of CO₂eq over 30 years*.
Biodiversity: Eight different tree species were selected for this afforestation project: sessile oak, black alder, Douglas fir, hornbeam, sycamore maple, warty birch, American red oak and hairy oak. The chosen species have been selected for their ability to withstand global warming whilst being well-suited to current conditions. The planting will help to expand adjacent forest patches. A mixed planting pattern, with trees of different species intermingled on a tree-by-tree basis within each plot, is planned to enhance resilience to climatic hazards.
Air filtration: the project is located within the Cotentin urban community and helps to improve air quality in this urban area.
