This forest of the Jura is in the process of withering away irreparably
Because of the shortening of cold winters regulating insect populations, bark beetles develop exponentially and nibble the stands. In the softwood forests of the Jura Vaudois Regional Nature Park, the impact is considerable.
This epidemic mainly concerns the forests of northern and eastern France and causes rapid dieback, even the death of trees. This phenomenon is easily identifiable with stands turning from green to brown or white, becoming sensitive to the slightest gust of wind. These “dry” forests end up crashing to the ground, giving way to desolate landscapes and no longer capture CO2. If the forest massif is neither adapted nor renewed, this situation can lead to its gradual disappearance. Since the trees no longer have value, silvicultural management is also compromised. We are talking here about "silvicultural impasse".
This 1.77 hectare reforestation project located at Lac des Rouges Truites in the Jura would store 623 tons of CO2 equivalent in 30 years*. The plots concerned by the project will be entirely harvested because of the bark beetle. The stand in place was unfortunately monospecific and reforestation is therefore essential. It was decided to install a mix of species (Spanish fir, sycamore maple, lime tree and European larch) better suited to prolonged hot periods.
-Socio-economic: A local forestry work company will carry out the reforestation, and the harvested wood will also be transformed nearby.
-Preservation of the soil: No work on the soil will be carried out except for windrowing the residue from the cutting. Soil life and carbon will thus be preserved.
-Biodiversity: Reforestation will be carried out with 4 indigenous species adapted to the current and future climate.
