Located in the heart of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, between the villages of Labets-Biscay and Masparraute, the project takes root in the lush landscapes of the inner Basque Country, known for its gentle hills, rich biodiversity, and dynamic agriculture. This area enjoys a temperate oceanic climate with regular rainfall, ideal for fruit growing, especially kiwis—France being the leading European producer. Local traditions blend with innovation, making the territory a benchmark for sustainable and diversified agriculture.
Mr. Arnaud Guillemin plans to plant 1.6 hectares of kiwifruit in February 2023. The selected plots were previously used for annual cereal crops.
Planting permanent trees will sequester more CO2 throughout the year compared to a temporary crop. This project will make it possible to store 67,32 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 20 years*.
The project responds to social and economic issues: The production of kiwis is still not very present in France, increasing it means reducing our imports. This plantation will also allow the farmer to diversify his income.
A project favorable to biodiversity: the establishment of new permanent crops on the farm will provide a stable habitat for different species that were not necessarily present.
Soil preservation: The soil will also be able to sequester more CO2 because it will no longer be worked each year.
Water resources will be protected: In order to limit soil erosion and leaching, 80% of the orchard will benefit from permanent grass cover. An action that will also be very beneficial for local biodiversity and will limit consumption of water. Precision irrigation equipment will also be used to limit the amount of water needed for crops.
