Examples: reducing the frequency of soil cultivation, minimalist plot preparation, restoring organic matter and preserving soil microfauna.
Examples: diversity and locality of crop species, preservation of habitat for local flora and fauna, presence of beehives for pollination.
Examples: territorial dynamics, societal demand, diversification of the activity, local sales/processing, working conditions, sharing of good practices.
Examples: Consideration of wetlands, use of adapted species, drip-connected irrigation tools.

Located in the heart of the Landes region, the village of Duhort-Bachen enjoys a landscape rich in agricultural and forest heritage. Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the administrative region, is renowned for its fertile soils, temperate oceanic climate, and remarkable natural assets. Historically devoted to large-scale crops and livestock, the area is now experiencing a dynamic shift towards diversified and sustainable agriculture. Local farmers are committed to combining innovation with biodiversity preservation, reflecting a strong national transition towards agroecology.
The French kiwi sector, historically concentrated in the Southwest and Nouvelle-Aquitaine, faces challenges such as varietal renewal, climate adaptation, and the promotion of local production. New resilient and low-carbon orchards like this one ensure the long-term future of this emblematic crop and bolster regional food sovereignty.
The SCEA of Menon plans to plant 2.5 hectares of kiwis in March 2023. The selected plots were previously used for annual cereal crops.
Planting permanent trees will sequester more CO2 throughout the year compared to a temporary crop. This project will make it possible to store 131.97 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 20 years*.
The farm has been certified High Environmental Value (HVE) since 2022, which guarantees a reasoned and efficient management of its inputs (fertilizers, irrigation, phytosanitary products) as well as the preservation of hedges, tree lines, wood edges and others. natural features of ecological interest around the plots.
The project responds to social and economic issues: The production of kiwis is still not very present in France, increasing it means reducing our imports. This plantation will also allow the farmer to diversify his income.
A project favorable to biodiversity: the establishment of new permanent crops on the farm will provide a stable habitat for different species that were not necessarily present.
Soil preservation: The soil will also be able to sequester more CO2 because it will no longer be worked each year.
The water resource will be protected: In order to limit soil erosion, leaching and therefore the overconsumption of fertilizers, the entire orchard will benefit from a permanent grass cover. An action that will also be very beneficial for local biodiversity and will limit overconsumption of water. Precision irrigation equipment will also be used to limit the amount of water needed for crops.
* The final value of the estimate will only be established after verification by an independent auditor and an administrative verification decision.
